Relationship Therapy with Steven

My Approach

I trained in a developmental model of relationship therapy which is based on the premise that particular aspects of childhood development will influence how an adult engages in their loving relationships today.

This framework highlights that relationship difficulties often stem from how couples navigate their differences, rather than the differences themselves. It emphasises the importance of each person maintaining their individuality while being part of the relationship. This approach encourages both partners to take responsibility for their role in the relationship and view struggles as shared challenges, rather than assigning blame to one person.

The goal of couples counselling is to build awareness of how difficulties arise and how they affect the relationship. Understanding the core issues creates the opportunity to explore more effective solutions.

Key tasks of couples therapy include gaining clarity on:

  • The kind of life you want to create together
  • The type of partner you aspire to be to build that life and relationship
  • Personal barriers to becoming the partner you want to be
  • The skills and insights needed to achieve these goals
